Spirituality

At St Mary’s, we understand spirituality as an ongoing reflective journey. It is something we feel within ourselves, rooted in the belief that we are all ‘wonderfully made’ (Psalm 139: 14). Spirituality enables us to experience awe and wonder, ask questions, seek understanding and make connections – with ourselves, with others, with the world and beyond. It allows us to be absorbed in the present moment and to be aware of something bigger than ourselves. It allows us to reflect, be inspired and to grow. ‘Spirituality is the act of being fully human by discovering and revealing ourselves through love.’ (Andrew Rickett)

As a school, we have chosen to use the Windows, Mirrors, Doors concept as a common reflective structure for spirituality:

🌟 WINDOWS · MIRRORS · DOORS 🌟

Exploring Spirituality in Our School

🪟 WINDOWS – Noticing the World with Wonder

Windows help us look beyond ourselves and notice the world in meaningful ways.
In spirituality, windows remind us to pause, observe and feel a sense of awe and wonder about life.

Spiritual Questions to Ask:

  • What can I see that inspires me?
  • What makes me feel “wow” or “ow”?
  • What do I notice about our world, community or nature?
  • How does what I see make me think or feel?
  • What questions do I have about life, people or beliefs?

🪞 MIRRORS – Reflecting on Ourselves

Mirrors help us look inside ourselves to understand our feelings, our choices and what matters to us.
In spirituality, mirrors remind us to be honest, kind and thoughtful about who we are becoming.

Spiritual Questions to Ask:

  • How am I feeling right now?
  • What is important to me and why?
  • Do others feel the same “wows” and “ows” as I do?
  • How do my beliefs or values shape my thoughts?
  • How can I explain what I think or believe?

🚪 DOORS – Choosing How We Move Forward

Doors help us think about the future and the choices we make.
In spirituality, doors represent growth, courage, and the chance to make a positive difference.

Spiritual Questions to Ask:

  • What good choice can I make today?
  • How can I help others or bring about change?
  • What actions could make the world fairer or kinder?
  • How does this situation affect me and others?
  • How might my understanding grow as I go forward?

✨ WHY THIS MATTERS FOR SPIRITUALITY

  • Windows help us see the world with wonder.
  • Mirrors help us understand ourselves with honesty.
  • Doors help us act with courage and kindness.

Together, they support our spiritual journey — helping us find meaning, reflect deeply, and grow into compassionate, thoughtful and spiritual people.
